New American Abstract Modern Expressionist
GERARD CALISTE
Waterlines series 2006 is my debut series. The body of work was conceived from my personal emotional reaction to the "storm" which forever affected the lives of so many people from New Orleans. The figurative depictions in this series reflects the sights and sounds and deep feeling of raw emotions experienced during as well as the aftermath of huricane Katrina. I received a text message from my sister while having dinner at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. The text read... " WE have to evacuate a category 5 hurricane is headed towards New Orleans!" Soon after my sister, her kids, my mom her brothers , their wives and of course the dogs headed to Jacksonville Florida to take shelter with my brother in his modest one bedroom pad. I took in my grandparents, aunt, her husband and her kids to my one bed room. Everyone arrived safely to Houston and Florida. We watched the news non stop for conditions back home. As the water receded and the city slowly reopened it was time to evaluate what was left. Raw emotions, anger, fear, waterline stains soaked the moldy walls marking each level as the water got lower and lower. I needed to capture my personal perspective of what had happed as an artist as well as a native New Orleanian. I knew this event would be recorded in history from many angles, by many any people. This series is my dedication.
